Securing a future for Mountain Gorillas

Securing a future for Mountain Gorillas

The International Gorilla Conservation Programme is a unique coalition of international conservation organizations joining forces with national and local partners to ensure the long-term survival of the now endangered mountain gorillas.

IGCP recognizes that the earth’s survival is dependent on humanity’s ability to maintain a healthy and balanced environment that includes all species of wildlife.

Here in the mountainous forests of central Africa live the last remaining mountain gorillas. Now endangered, mountain gorillas number barely a thousand. They have only this one home, a network of parks crossing the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC. The International Gorilla Conservation Programme acts as steward to a legacy of collaborative and inclusive conservation, contributing to the protection of this place and the gorillas who depend on it.

IGCP has maintained a constant effort over the decades, innovating and adapting its approach to effectively support the conservation of mountain gorillas at the population and transboundary landscape levels, working to backstop and enhance the capacity of individuals and institutions across international borders.

Our collaboration, across the three countries has enhanced social and political support for conservation, enhanced tourism revenue-sharing among park adjacent communities and improved effectiveness in the management of the mountain gorilla parks.

These achievements have yielded results, with the mountain gorilla moving from Critically Endangered to Endangered by a review of the IUCN Red List of Threatened SpeciesTM in 2018, but so much more must be done, and you can help.
